Location:

Broadway Avenue, Palmerston North

Client:

Foodstuffs Wgtn

Completed:

2011

The brief for this project was to expand the site car park and increase the trading area by 50% by extending the building out on three sides. The new layout required an extensive refit and refurbishment to the interior trading and preparation areas and the relocation of the main entry.

Materials were selected from a coordinated pallet with natural, neutral and temperate tones, to complement the existing urban landscape and local characteristics. Key and strategic elements were emphasised by complementary colour and material variations.

The elevations have been orchestrated with expressed eaves, horizontal and vertical articulation, and solid and glazed modules that break down the massing of the building and create visual interest to the street and public car park. Vertical glazed strips along Broadway Ave, and extensive glazing along the east elevation provide glimpses of activity within the supermarket as well as introducing natural daylight inside the store.

A veranda along the east elevation leads you from the street to the new customer entrance which is emphasised with an extended single slope roof, substantial tinted glazing with horizontal louvres and expressed structural columns clad in stonework. Within the store a cohesive and coordinated colour palette has been combined with feature ceilings, bulkheads and wall features to demarcate the various departments within the trading area.
